March For The Fallen

The March for the Fallen 14 mile and 28 mile hikes take place on Ft Indiantown Gap, PA in September. Ft. Indiantown Gap is a US Army Post located in Lebanon County, PA. The March for the Fallen was advertised at my work though fliers, though further information details were hard to find. This course included a 14 mile or 28 mile option both with heavy weight rucksack and light weight (no rucksack) divisions. The flier mentioned running as an option, but not specific details as to whether the run was limited to the 5K distance or offered in the longer distances. I emailed the race director with no response, I finally reached out to a volunteer who said he has seen runners on the course in previous years.

The registration tent was difficult to find the day of the event. Directions online read “come off highway I-81 and follow signs” however, the signs were difficult to see due to very dense fog. Strickler Field has no Google or Apple maps address therefore GPS was not helpful. A photo on the Facebook event listed USO, however, when I arrived at the USO I was told I had to go across a field to register.

Every mile marker displayed the photo and name of a fallen veteran. The course offered race support every 2 miles with full water bottles, fruit and port-a-potties. The course map showed a loop, however, the course was out and back. The course was extremely hilly and rocky and was definitely too rocky for running. There were no medals at the finish, however, registration offered a traditional military coin.

Pros: Scenic course, great race support, supports fallen veterans

Cons: Rocky course for running, not much information, hard to find
